Goal setting with your personal trainer

Starting a fitness program without a goal is like going for a walk without a destination. It's likely you will end up somewhere random and not necessarily where you want to be. A sculpture or an architect has a vision at the start of a project, an artist can see a mental image of what they want to paint and a company has a mission statement. The point is you need an end result in mind, a direction, a purpose. If you don't have a health and fitness goal, it's unlikely you will progress at all.

Maggie's Nottingham: Exercise and Cancer

Recently I was approached to provide an exercise course for individuals recovering from cancer at Maggie's Nottingham. Having never heard of this organisation before I went to meet with in-house Counselling Psychologist Tina Johnson to find out what it was all about. What is sciatic pain and why do I have it?

Sciatica is a commonly used but poorly understood term that people often associate with pain radiating down the back of the leg.  Whilst there can be many causes ofposterior thigh pain, true sciatica relates to a compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, the large nerve running from the spine down the back of the leg all the way to the foot.

In previous articles you may recall the introduction to various concepts including the brains virtual map of the body, the fact that pain can change based on context and the acknowledgement of pre stored physical reactions to injury threats known as Neurotag's. If ignored, these concepts may work against you, however if embraced they maybe integrated into your rehabilitation.

The Triad of Health

As a personal trainer I see it as my role not just to help people lose a few pounds or to run a little faster (although that helps) but to improve their overall health. Being healthier means that you will get the most out of your body, your career, your relationships and ultimately your life. The model I use to do this and the aspects of health I try to subtly influence are found in a model called the triad of health.
