A Good Personal Trainer is an Educator

Get Fit, Get Lean, Learn What Really Works

A Good Personal Trainer is an Educator

Did the title grab your attention? Great, then this article is written for you!

Although I'm a personal trainer working in the fitness industry, I don't buy fitness magazines. Why? They frustrate me with their bad advice.  I do however like to pick them up in the shop and have a flick through from time to time, I just like to see if the content is different or the message has changed. A headline that caught my eye recently on the front of a men's fit mag was 'a six pack in 24hrs'!

Goal setting with your personal trainer

Goal setting with your personal trainer

Starting a fitness program without a goal is like going for a walk without a destination. It's likely you will end up somewhere random and not necessarily where you want to be. A sculpture or an architect has a vision at the start of a project, an artist can see a mental image of what they want to paint and a company has a mission statement. The point is you need an end result in mind, a direction, a purpose. If you don't have a health and fitness goal, it's unlikely you will progress at all.

Maggies Wing Walk 2014

In August of 2014 I made the decision to raise £1000 for the charity Maggies. To learn more about my involvement with Maggies and the task I set myself read the blogs Maggies and Charity Wing Walk.

In my previous blog I introduced my ambition to perform a wing walk and I laid out the challenges I faced as part of the process. I’m pleased to announce that I have successfully completed the wing walk and raised a grand total of just over £1200 for Maggies. Read on to hear more about my experience of the event.

Make time for quality sleep and relaxation

7 Habits of highly healthy people Part 3

Healthy people understand that life is about balance, if you lean too far in one direction you lose equilibrium. As important as it is for us to be active we require an equal balance of inactivity. Our autonomic nervous system can be broken into three major parts but it's the latter two which we will focus on in this article;

  1. Enteric System. This governs the function of the gastrointestinal system.
  2. Sympathetic Nervous System. This system governs our activity.
  3. Parasympathetic Nervous System. This system governs restorative functions.

Set personal goals and rewards

7 Habits of highly healthy people part 2

You have heard the proverb 'Every journey starts with a single step'. This is very true and the journey seems so much more achievable if the destination is set and the route is planned and clear. Goal setting is an important part of the change process, as without a destination you can never arrive.

It is a very worthwhile process to sit down and find time to dig down into the detail of what you want: What is it that you would like to do if you were as fit and healthy as you could be? What specifically would you want to look and feel like? How would you like to behave? How would you like to be perceived by others? How would your life be different if you were in peak condition?

Develop positive self - talk

7 Habits of highly healthy people part 1

This article title is of course a spin off from the book by Stephen Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The book is a fantastic read and has had a big influence on how I live my life. If you haven't read it yet, consider it a must - read.

So you want to be healthier. You want to have bounds of energy, to be fit and agile, to feel fresh and alert, to have focus and drive, to stay free from disease and to be... happy. That, my friends, is living the dream. If you so decide, that dream can become reality.

The Triad of Health

The Triad of Health

As a personal trainer I see it as my role not just to help people lose a few pounds or to run a little faster (although that helps) but to improve their overall health. Being healthier means that you will get the most out of your body, your career, your relationships and ultimately your life. The model I use to do this and the aspects of health I try to subtly influence are found in a model called the triad of health.

5 Steps To Goal Setting

Program yourself for success.

5 Steps To Goal Setting

In order to arrive you must have a destination, wandering aimlessly will get you nowhere.

Whether you have been a health fanatic for years or you are just about to embark on a health and fitness regime for the first time, one thing is for sure; if you know specifically what it is that you want to achieve your chances of success are significantly increased. Human beings are creatures of habit, if we continually repeat a behavior we become comfortable with it often to the point that we reject the idea of change. This is fine if we are content with the outcome of the behavior, it becomes difficult if we desire a different outcome.
